A fantastic evening was had by all on Friday 9th October. When Thirst with the Narthex (St John the Baptist Cathedral) Norwich and Whoop marketing hosted this enjoyable food and drink event.
The menu was designed by Head Chef Neil to complement the specially selected Beers that were sampled by the lucky few.
We started the evening with an Aperitif of Orval, served in Champagne glasses and sipped in the beautiful cathedral while listening to the history of Trappist brewing.
We then proceeded to the dining room for our starter of, Smoked Salmon filled with a smoked mackerel and coriander pate, served on a bed of rocket, finished with a vanilla vinaigrette this was paired with La Trappe Witte. The vanilla brought out the soft notes from the Witte and the Witte enhanced the lovely smoked mackerel.
The mains followed a talk about the next 2 beers, preparing our dinners for a mouth watering experience of braised ox cheeks slow cooked in ale and served with rosemary dumplings. Achel Bruin 8 & Chimay Rouge bought out different notes from the rich gravy of dark fruits & apricots. The ox cheeks melted in the mouth matched with the delicate taste of the dumplings.
More talk & light conversation followed to allow time to prepare for our trio of desserts (yes 3),Tarte Tatin, vanilla ice cream & cheese this was paired with Westmalle Triple & everyone agreed that the star was the ice cream and beer! a heavenly combination.
A number of people were left wondering how we could top that! but we did, with, Rochefort 10. A strong beer that has a deep fruit nose, full bodied mouth feel that lighten the dark bitter chocolate we served it with.
This was a relaxed evening which showcased not just the beer but, the great food and beautiful surroundings.
So much so that the next one is booked for March 2016
